“A Night in the Life” Album Review
by Heather Schroering (Abbey Road on the River)
Anyone can cover a Beatles song, but only Steve Sizemore Group can cover a Beatles song the way KISS would. Bands have been covering Beatles tunes since the 60s, but it is always refreshing to hear a cover so distinct yet so true to the spirit of the Beatles at the same time. SSG’s A Night In The Life is certainly fit for those ever-so freeing windows-down-volume-up moments spent in the car.
A Night In The Life is a compilation of live Beatles tunes recorded while on tour in 2009. Steve Sizemore Group dissects the average Beatles song, and reconstructs it, giving us something a little harder, a little more rockin’, and a little less boyish. Throw out the tambourines and replace them with louder drums. Crank up the amplifiers about twenty notches. Add some sexy, raspier voices and the mathematic formula for Steve Sizemore Group is complete.
Opening the album with “Sgt. Pepper” and immediately charging into “Day Tripper,” SSG certainly does not withhold the bold, stentorian sound that generates such an electrifying energy that will keep your head banging. The band creates a powerful force field of rock ‘n’ roll with songs like “Hey Bulldog” and “Helter Skelter,” songs that were absolutely made for Steve Sizemore Group to perform. “Helter Skelter” is pure resonance one can easily get lost in. Guitars ripping. Drums banging. All that is missing is rhythm/lead guitarist, Brett Parker, breathing fire, and believe me, he would if he could. It is an art to convey that type of sound on a recorded version, and SSG nails it with this jam.
With lush harmonies and calming acoustic guitars, the band slows it down with “Picasso’s Last Words.” An appreciation for the less appreciated Wings tune is always a perquisite. In addition, SSG shows their soft side and proves that they are not just entirely wailing guitars and blaring noise.
Concluding with an ear-pleasing rendition of “Blackbird,” A Night In The Life is a dynamic masterpiece that pays sincere tribute to the Beatles. This record is only a taste of what these guys have to offer. It would be ludicrous to pass up an opportunity to see these men perform live.
Steve Sizemore Group’s kick ass cosmic electricity will leave you roisterous and howling for more. Brace yourselves. SSG could just be the next rock legend. It doesn’t get more rockin’ than that.
